UNSW Explores AI-Powered Chatbot, SCOUT, to Enhance Student Experience

07 January 2025

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is embracing innovation by exploring the potential of Scout, an AI-powered experimental chatbot designed to revolutionize the student experience at the University. With the aim of improving accessibility, streamlining support, and reducing administrative burdens, Scout is paving the way for a smarter, more responsive campus.

A Smart Solution to Student Queries
Scout acts as a single point of contact, offering quick, reliable answers to a wide array of student enquiries. Powered by UNSW’s trusted content from the Current Students website, along with select internal data such as course outlines and FAQs, Scout directs students to essential administrative, learning, and wellbeing support resources.

Currently piloted in Term 3, 2024, across various courses in the Arts, Design & Architecture, Engineering, and Science faculties, Scout’s primary aim is to address common student pain points. Additionally, the chatbot alleviates the administrative workload by responding to thousands of student queries, providing staff with more time to focus on complex, personalized support.

Transforming the Student Experience

Scout is designed to assist students with a wide range of aspects related to university life. By utilizing UNSW’s trusted data sources, it offers guidance on general university inquiries, support services, events, activities, and even provides information on financial or health concerns. This comprehensive approach helps enhance the student experience, allowing students to focus more on their learning and wellbeing.

Benefits for Students

As a versatile tool for everyday support, Scout offers numerous advantages for students, including:

  • Instant Answers: Students can quickly obtain important information about UNSW services, courses, administrative processes, and deadlines.
  • Tailored Responses: Scout delivers context-specific answers, ensuring the most relevant information is provided based on each student’s needs.
  • 24/7 Availability: Accessible through Moodle, Scout is available round the clock, allowing students to find help at any time.
  • Multilingual Capabilities: With its multilingual support, Scout ensures that UNSW’s diverse student community has easy access to essential information.

Benefits for Staff

In addition to enhancing the student experience, Scout also brings significant benefits to UNSW staff by:

  • Reducing Workload: Scout handles routine and repetitive queries, allowing staff to focus on more complex, personalized student interactions.
  • Streamlining Communication: By integrating seamlessly with UNSW’s websites and systems, Scout ensures that students receive accurate information without the need to contact multiple departments.
  • Improving Efficiency: By managing common administrative tasks, Scout enables staff to devote more time to their core responsibilities, such as teaching, research, and providing personalized support to students in need.

Looking Ahead: The Future of AI at UNSW

While Scout is still in its early experimental phase, its potential to become a key part of UNSW’s future AI strategy is promising. Scout aligns with UNSW’s Education Technology Roadmap 2024–2028, specifically advancing workstreams focused on improving the student experience and optimizing institutional efficiency.

As technology continues to play an increasingly central role in education, Scout stands at the forefront of transforming the way UNSW supports its students and staff, contributing to a smarter, more responsive university environment.
