Celebrating Batik: Tradition Meets Innovation at Raffles Design Singapore

The Raffles Design Singapore goes beyond the classroom to equip students with real-world creative expertise. Our latest initiative brought an enriching cultural and design experience through an exclusive session featuring Mr. Tony Sugiarta of aNerd Gallery and Ms. Oniatta Effendi of Galeri Tokokita / Baju by Oniatta. This immersive talk delved into the essence of Batik—exploring its role beyond a dye or print to its deep cultural significance. Students gained valuable insights into its Indonesian heritage, regional motifs, and its distinction from Malaysian Batik. The discussion extended to Batik’s transformation into slow fashion and the importance of copyright protection in preserving its legacy. Bringing the art to life, the speakers showcased real Batik samples and shared their personal journeys, igniting meaningful discussions among students. Encouraging further exploration, they invited students to visit aNerd Gallery and Galeri Tokokita to deepen their appreciation of this intricate craft. This session served as a launchpad for students preparing for the SG Batik Design Contest—an exciting competition inviting designers, artists, and creatives to craft a Batik print that embodies Singapore’s unique identity. Organized in collaboration with Jack Sim, Founder of Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) Hub and the World Toilet Organization, and supported by MCCY, the contest challenges participants to transform local inspirations—from hawker culture and HDB landscapes to coastal waves and lush greenery—into stunning Batik designs. Who Can Join? Open to everyone aged 16 and above—students, professionals, and design enthusiasts alike. Participants may enter individually or in teams (up to three members). Why Participate? Five winning designs will be selected for production. Each winner receives S$1,000 in cash. Winning designs will be exhibited in celebration of SG60 and may be produced. Submission Deadline 📅 1 May 2025, 23:59 SGT Through these initiatives, The Raffles Design Singapore continues to bridge culture and innovation, empowering students with industry knowledge and creative confidence.
