Sydney’s newest ferry named after UNSW’s Martin Green

The Martin Green ferry is set to begin operating on the F3 Circular Quay to Parramatta route, offering a unique opportunity for the public to learn about the contributions of Professor Martin Green, whose groundbreaking work in solar technology has had a global impact. At an event held at the Balmain Shipyard on Friday, NSW Premier Chris Minns and Transport Minister Jo Haylen unveiled that the newest addition to the Sydney ferry fleet would be named after UNSW Sydney’s Scientia Professor Martin Green. Professor Green, the Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics at UNSW, has spent over 50 years pioneering solar technology in Australia. Often referred to as “the father of modern photovoltaics,” his innovations have transformed the energy sector globally. “I never thought I’d have a ferry named after me—what an extraordinary honor!” Prof. Green remarked. “This recognition goes beyond me personally; it’s a tribute to my team at UNSW Sydney, who have been at the forefront of solar innovation for decades. In 2025, Australia will generate over 20% of its electricity from solar energy, and this number will keep growing.” The new ferry, named the Martin Green, uses 40% less fuel than the vessel it replaces, aligning with the goal of honoring Prof. Green’s work in renewable energy. Premier Minns emphasized the ferry’s significance in showcasing Australian engineering excellence and its role in modernizing Sydney’s public transport system. The ferry will contribute to reducing emissions, enhancing fuel efficiency, and providing a more comfortable ride for passengers on the F3 route. Minister Haylen remarked that the new ferries are part of the government’s initiative to honor Australian pioneers in science and innovation. “It’s fitting that this ferry is named after Martin Green, as it is a shining example of our commitment to sustainable transport options,” she said. “These Parramatta River Class ferries will not only help lower our carbon footprint but will also offer a faster, more reliable service.” The Martin Green Ferry is the fourth of seven new Parramatta River Class ferries designed to replace the aging RiverCats. Designed by Incat Crowthers from the Northern Beaches and built by Richardson Devine Marine in Hobart, it stands as an example of sustainable transportation designed and built in Australia. “I take great pride in knowing this ferry was conceived and constructed in Australia,” said Prof. Green. “It’s fulfilling to witness such an advanced, sustainable vessel serving as transportation for thousands of people daily in this beautiful city. The Sydney to Parramatta route is one of my favorite ferry rides, and I’m excited to see a ferry with my name on it traversing this route.” Prof. Green also highlighted the ferry’s future-proof design, which includes the option for conversion to electric propulsion. “I look forward to the day when the entire Sydney ferry fleet is electric, powered by solar energy, enhancing public transport’s sustainability and reducing environmental impact.” Throughout his 50-year career at UNSW Sydney, Prof. Green has been instrumental in developing the Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) technology, which has become the world’s most efficient and commercially viable silicon solar cell. Today, more than 90% of global solar energy production utilizes PERC technology. UNSW Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Merlin Crossley, expressed pride in Prof. Green’s contribution: “The technology developed by Professor Martin Green underpins over 90% of the world’s solar panels. His achievements make us all proud, and we are thrilled to see them honored in such a wonderful way.” Looking to make your mark in innovation and technology? UNSW Sydney offers world-class programs and opportunities to help you become a leader in your field, just like Professor Green.
