TERMS OF STUDY IN NEW ZEALAND
- Student Visa & Health Insurance
The student visa will be valid for one year and will be renewed every year. Students are permitted to work part – time up to 20 hours per week and full – time during semester holidays. Post-study work visa (open) will be given to students after completing 12 months of study to find work related to their studies. After getting a job, employers can help provide reference letters so that students can get a work visa for two (2) years.
- Accommodation
Like in Australia, international students in New Zealand have a variety of accommodation options such as school dormitories, renting apartments and even homestay options .
- Side job
Currently, full-time students can work part time 20 hours per week during study periods and work full-time 40 hours during vacation periods. Even after graduating, international students are still allowed to work for one (1) year.
Before undertaking part-time work, students are required to obtain permission from the New Zealand immigration office, which a fee is required to obtain.
The salary earned during part-time work is around NZD 10 – NZD 15 per hour.
NEW ZEALAND QUALIFICATION AUTHORITY (NZQA)
As a Commonwealth country , New Zealand has a British education system that is recognized worldwide. Equal quality in all educational institutions, both public and private, is regulated by NZQA, part of the Ministry of Education.
NZQA has the aim of developing and guaranteeing the quality of educational programs organized by teachers’ schools, polytechnics, institutes of technology and other educational institutions, except universities.
- Primary & Secondary Schools
Primary school in New Zealand starts from the age of five (5) years. Their academic year starts in January and ends in December.
In general, the length of primary and secondary education in New Zealand is 13 years. Primary School is up to year 8, then Secondary School is up to year 13. Compulsory education in New Zealand is up to year 10. After year 10, students may continue to a Diploma to study certain skills.
If students continue to Secondary School until completion, they will get the NCEA ( National Certificate of Educational Achievement ) qualification which is recognized throughout New Zealand.
- Institute of Technology & Polytechnic (ITP)
As mentioned previously, students can continue to take education and training after year 10. They can take a Certificate , Diploma or Bachelor Degree at Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics in New Zealand.
The programs offered emphasize practical experience and application in work situations, such as agriculture, art and design, building and construction, media studies, hospitality and tourism. Everything is developed in collaboration with advisory groups representing the industry, so that the programs held are relevant, current and innovative.
Graduates of this vocational education receive the same status as a degree from a university.
Institute of Technology & Polytechnic fees range from NZD 16,000 – NZD 20,000 per year .
- Professional Undergraduate Program (Undergraduate Degree) & Professional Postgraduate Program (Postgraduate Degree)
New Zealand has eight (8) universities offering an engaging learning environment and high quality qualifications, ranging from Bachelor’s Degree level to Postgraduate Masters and PhDs in academic and professional studies.
These eight universities are spread across New Zealand. Universities located on the North Island are the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology (AUT), University of Waikato, Massey University, and Victoria University.
Meanwhile those located on the South Island are the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, Lincoln University which is also in the city of Christchurch, and the University of Otago in Dunedin.
University tuition fees for Undergraduate / S1 level usually range between NZD27,000 – NZD40,000 per year (depending on the major taken); while for Postgraduate / Masters level it is around NZD 31,000 – NZ D 40,000 per year. Specifically for the PhD level, namely the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program, international students are only charged the same tuition fees as local residents, namely around NZD6,000 – NZD7,000 per year.
